Album Review: Soviet Zion

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

On January 15th Giles Howe and Katy Lipson released their new feature-length concept album, Soviet Zion which is now available to download through online music platforms like iTunes, Apple Music and Amazon.

Featuring performances from West End stars like Kimberly Blake, Joseph Claus, John Ellis and Naomi Kilby, the piece explores the intertwining lives of pioneers who move to Siberia participating in the real-life movement to establish the first Jewish homeland of the modern era – a Yiddish-speaking, socialist utopia. Challenged by the unexpected reality they must face, great sacrifice must be made to achieve the freedom they seek.

Set against this grand historical backdrop the story of six intertwining lives explores questions of identity, integrity, belonging and nationhood; offering a glimpse into what happened to this alternative homeland.

To celebrate the album launch CentreStage were sent a copy and we were honestly blown away by the talent featured in this project.
As somebody who is incredibly interested in the Russian revolutionary period, this story was one which fascinated and enthralled me. While the story was gripping and filled with passion, the album as a whole feels like a pretty big commitment.
With a run time of just under 3 hours I would definitely suggest treating yourself to a mid-way interval, partly as a break and partly as a breather. As this album is based on real-life events from a frightening period in Russian History, it isn’t your happy-go-lucky musical. It is intense and takes a great deal of concentration from the listener.

If you’re a fan of a story driven production I would definitely recommend Soviet Zion. This is a powerful but intense story which will see you clinging to the end of your seat (or headphones).

The album is available to purchase through iTunes, Apple Music or Amazon. For more information head to the official Soviet Zion website.
