Over the years Emily Tierney has appeared in some of the greatest musicals around from The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, to Ghost and Eugenius.
Most recently Emily has tour the country with the brand new musical Club Tropicana.
Following the tour we’ve had a little chat with Emily to discuss all things theatre, travel and beauty!
You’ve recently been touring with Club Tropicana the Musical. How’s the tour been so far?
“It’s been great fun, thank you! The show itself has been a riot to perform every night. There has been a lot of laughs, onstage and off, and the reaction we get from the crowd has been just fantastic. We were also blessed with an extremely talented and lovely cast and creative team.”
For those who may be unfamiliar with the show, how would you best describe Club Tropicana?
“It’s a hilarious comedy set in the ‘Club Tropicana’ hotel on a Spanish island in the 1980s, packed full of all the best 80’s hits, guaranteed to get you up singing and dancing and fill you with nostalgia.”
You guys have very recently performed your last show. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to say goodbye to such a fun production. How’re you feeling about saying goodbye to Christine?
“Well I’m going to miss the wig! Its been wonderful getting to play a baddie for the first time in my career and I’ll miss strutting round in my stilettos, being nasty every night! I was given a lot of creative freedom in the rehearsal room and had so much fun exploring and creating this complex, unpleasant character.”
Throughout the tour you’ve visited some truly beautiful cities such as Cardiff, Manchester and Edinburgh to name but a few. Do you happen to have a personal favourite?
“I love all three of those cities! We have actually visited twenty five different cities with the show so it’s hard to choose a favourite, but Manchester will always hold a special place in my heart as I’ve spent a lot of time there and opened Wicked there five years ago!”
Over the years you’ve played a range of brilliant roles such as Glinda in both Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, Molly in Ghost and Carrie/ Super Hot Lady in Eugenius, but are there any roles sitting on your bucket list which you’d love to take on?
“I actually feel so grateful because I’ve had the chance to play some of the roles I used to dream about, Glinda in Wicked and Molly in Ghost. I love a role that challenges me, that pushes me outside my comfort zone and I love working on new shows and creating roles for the first time… But if we are talking iconic musical theatre characters I would love to have a go at playing Eva Peron, Jenna (Waitress).”
So many of the characters you’ve played have gone on massive journeys and are so incredibly empowering for audiences, but are there any characters within the theatre world which you feel you’ve particularly learned from?
“I think you learn something from all the roles you take on but playing Molly in Ghost was a real challenge for me. It’s such a beautiful, heartbreaking story and I felt a huge responsibility, every night, to tell it with as much truth and honesty as I possibly could. She goes through such an epic journey in the show and sharing that with the audience every night was an absolute privilege. She taught me that as humans we can endure and survive the most horrendous ordeals and come out the other side even stronger.”
If you could give anybody reading this post one piece of advice to live by, what would it be?
“In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take! Dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today! (Sorry that’s two!)”
I think we all know that stage make-up isn’t exactly, shall we say, kind to our skin. What are your skin care favourites for keeping your skin healthy and looking fresh?
“After eleven years working on stage and in TV and film I have a full, very rigorous skincare routine! I used to be terrible when I was younger but I’m so good at taking care of my face these days (and if you check out my Instagram I often share my favourite products and tips!). Generally I try to drink lots of water, get as much sleep as I can, always wear SPF and double cleanse morning and night before applying serum, moisturiser and facial oil – I’m a proper skincare/beauty geek! I love Murad, Espa and Sisley products (to name but a few!) I try to get a facial once a month too.”
Your Instagram is full of stunning photos from a range of beautiful places. Your page is constantly re-igniting the travel bug deep inside of me but if you could suggest just one of the places you’ve visited, which would you suggest and why?
“Thank you, so glad my travels inspire you. I think if I had to recommend somewhere it would be Cape Town! It’s got the most amazing climate, mind-blowing scenery and beaches, delicious food, its cheap to eat out and live, beautiful wine regions, no time difference (no jet lag), amazing culture and depending on the season there are whales, penguins (Boulders Beach), great white sharks to dive with and safari close by! It has everything!”
